The Google Business Profile checklist for local businesses
The 10 settings that decide whether you show up in the Google Maps top three, and how to check each one in minutes.
Why your profile matters more than your website
For "near me" searches, Google shows the Map Pack, the three businesses on the map, before any website. Most calls from local searches come from those three spots.
The checklist
Open your profile and go through these one by one:
- Primary category is the exact service you most want to be found for
- Up to 9 secondary categories that match what you really do
- Every service listed with a short description
- Business name matches your signage, with no extra keywords added
- Address or service area matches your website exactly
- Hours are correct, including holidays
- At least 10 recent photos of real work, not stock images
- A post every week, even a short one
- Every review answered within a few days
- Questions and answers section filled with real customer questions
The mistake that costs the most
Inconsistent details. If your phone number or address is different on your website, Google, Yelp and Facebook, Google trusts all of them less. Pick one version and use it everywhere.
